What is a toner and why is it so important in Korean skincare?

Toner, what is it?

In our previous blog, we discussed the power of the double cleanse — the essential first step in any Korean skincare routine. A double cleanse removes make-up, SPF, sebum, and impurities, leaving your skin truly clean.

But cleansing is just the beginning. Now that your skin is clean, it's time for the next step: toner.

Many people still associate toner with a stinging, drying product that leaves your skin feeling tight. Something that "belongs" but isn't really necessary. In Korean skincare, it's completely different. Here, toner isn't about degreasing or stripping. It's about restoring, hydrating, and preparing. But what exactly does a toner do? And why is this step so indispensable within an effective Korean skincare routine? We'll explain it to you step by step.

What exactly does a toner do?

Think of a toner as a primer for your serum or cream. It's like preparing your skin and subtly telling it: pay attention, another step is coming. After cleansing, your skin is clean, but also a little more vulnerable. Water and cleansing products can temporarily disrupt your skin's natural pH value. A toner helps to restore that balance and brings your skin back to its optimal condition. And that's important.

When your skin is balanced, it can absorb subsequent products — such as a serum or cream — much better. So, you simply get more out of your routine.

Light toner vs. richer toner

Not every toner is the same. Within Korean skincare, there are different textures, tailored to skin type and needs.

Let's start with a light toner. A light toner feels almost like water. You can pat this in with your hands and apply it in multiple layers — also known as the "7-skin method" (though you don't really need to use seven layers 😉).

These toners:

  • Hydrate
  • Soften the skin
  • Prepare perfectly for serum or cream
  • Are suitable for morning and evening

Ideal for normal, combination, or oilier skin.

Then a richer toner (like a rice toner or milk toner). This is a heavier toner and has a slightly fuller, milky, or nourishing texture. You mainly use this in your evening routine, when your skin can use some extra hydration.

They:

  • Provide more nourishment
  • Support the skin barrier
  • Ensure a comfortable, soft skin feel

Perfect for drier or sensitive skin — or when your skin simply needs some extra care.

Why not skip this step?

A toner may seem like a small step, but the difference is often in the details. By:

  • Balancing your skin
  • Lightly hydrating it
  • Preparing it for what's to come

…you ensure that your entire routine becomes more effective.

At Bare&Seoul, we don't believe in more products, but in smart steps that work together. And a toner is a wonderful example of that.

More is not needed. This is enough.
